Many of the challenges we face with computers mirror the challenges we encounter in our spiritual lives. In order to better understand as well as create memorable strategies for victory over the vulnerabilities that can plague our spiritual "operating system" let's explore the metaphors of a computer virus and an operating system.

Computer operating system: In a computer, an operating system is the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.

Spiritual operating system: Your spiritual operating system keeps you consistent with God's timing, enables you to function in your God-given gifts, and determines/defines your relationship with the surrounding world. 

Your spiritual operating system consists of God's promises, His Word, His blessings, and your destiny. Just like a computer’s operating system is crucial for functionality, your spiritual operating system is vital for spiritual well-being.

God's Promises - God's Track Record for an Amazing Future

2 Peter 1:4  Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

His Word - Source of Life and Principles

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

System Impairment

Computer Virus: Slows down system performance, causes programs to crash, or prevents boot-up.

Spiritual Virus: Slows down spiritual growth, causes confusion, and prevents you from living out your God-given purpose.

Spiritual Virus: Leads to spiritual identity theft, where you forget who you are in Christ.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Computer Virus: Spreads spam or performs DDoS attacks.

Spiritual Virus: Spreads gossip, slander, or false teachings within a church community, making it ineffective for Christ.

Computer Virus: Allows for remote control, and turning on cameras and microphones without consent.

Spiritual Virus: Causes a loss of inner peace, making you feel "exposed" or vulnerable to spiritual attacks resulting in a stronghold that causes the acceptance of defeat.

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.

Aesthetic Changes

Computer Virus: Shows popup ads or changes in desktop backgrounds, often displaying inappropriate content.

Spiritual Virus: Leads to changes in outward behavior that mirror an inner spiritual problem.

Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.

Resource Drain

Computer Virus: Drains bandwidth or uses up other computer resources.

Spiritual Virus: Drains emotional and spiritual energy, distracting you from what's important.
